Definition as presented at http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/Backwards_design
- Backwards design (or backward design) is an instructional design method invented by Wiggins and McTighe and is part of their larger Understanding by Design framework.
- “ Backward design begins with the end in mind: What enduring understandings do I want my students to develop?” . It is particularly suited for teacher designers who think in terms of what they wish to achieve.
The concept map shown below was an initial attempt at visualizing the elements of a backward design approach .
Since completing this course I have come to rely upon backward design as the go-to technique when creating the connection between assessments, outcomes/objectives and content. This system really brings clarity to the process.

Rich – you mentioned a work-in-progress – just as it should be. You already worked so well by creating a ‘brain dump’ version and then focusing it in such a way that appears here.
It seems that you are clear on mapping use and your course plans. Please be sure to narrow the focus (again) and adjust this as you prepare your final, so that an advanced version of this map can be included in your final project submission and only include the three parts written up in the final. ~ Datta Kaur
