Formative feedback for this module suggested ” tie your ice breaker more closely to your course content – adults, especially, view these more favorably if they see some connections, otherwise they can be sometimes seen as busy work”.
I came up with the following prompt:
What verb is important to you when creating objectives for your students? Why is it important. Is it difficult or easy to measure?
My response:
“Define” is an important verb I use with students. In order to get to higher level thinking its is often necessary to establish foundations built upon “defining”. It is relatively easy to measure whether something has been defined.

Hello everyone! Welcome to Learn101: Creating Effective Learning Outcomes. The course officially begins [insert date]. I’m Rich Denhart and I’ll be acting as facilitator as we explore and discuss how to create effective learning outcomes that are consistent from objective through content to assessment. As MMI has grown (a good thing) our faculty roster and schedule has grown. It has become increasingly difficult to address important pedagogical issues using the traditional in-service approach. Therefore, we have created this short four week online course in order to allow everyone to participate within the same asynchronous time frame. You will be able to complete the readings, content presentations, forums and other activities within your own schedule. A separate topic is completed each week with activities and forums due by Sunday at midnight. Calendar due dates can be found in the syllabus on the LMS. Many of you are new to online courses so this will be a great introduction to this flexible solution. I’d like you to do two things before the class begins:
- Let me know you have received this email by replying using your @mediainstitute email address.
- Login to the LMS as you normally would, navigate to Learn101 and view the Online Learning Orientation by clicking on the link underneath the syllabus in the introduction section.
- If you experience any login difficulties contact Mandy @[email address] or Greg @[email address].
I’m looking forward to sharing ideas and solutions with everyone so that we can improve consistency within the courses presented, establish best practices for creating learning outcomes and provide the best possible experience to our students. Please feel free to send me an email or call extension 375 to discuss any questions or concerns.
